Concrete remains fundamental to modern infrastructure, but cement production carries a significant carbon cost. Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs) offer a practical way to reduce Portland cement content while maintaining — and in many applications improving — durability and performance.
Materials such as fly ash, slag, silica fume and natural pozzolans can reduce embodied carbon, improve resistance to aggressive environments and extend service life. Their suitability depends on the required strength development, exposure conditions and local material availability.
The broader shift is from treating SCMs as niche alternatives to treating lower-carbon mix design as a normal part of responsible engineering.
